Spiders

Creepy crawlies like spiders can scare the heck out of even the bravest men and women. With their numbers reaching over 21 quadrillion in the world, you are likely to see some now and then – in and out of your home. You’d think they’d like to live in nature, where there is plenty of insects to eat (some 400 million to 800 million tons per year), but that’s not always the case. Spiders have a knack for invading homes as they can sneak in through small cracks around windows or doors, catch a ride on objects, furniture, plants, or other things that have been sitting untouched for a while.

Why Do Spiders Like It Indoors?

You may wonder why spiders even gravitate toward the inside of your home. Well, if it’s cold outside, they may be seeking a warm place to call home. Some prefer moist areas to reside, such as the crawl space or basement, while others gravitate toward dark and dry spaces, like the attic or air vents. As with most pests, easy access to water is an attraction, or they could be on the hunt and their presence is a sign of other insect infestations.

How Concerned Should I Be About Spiders?

Of the almost 45,000 species of spiders globally, only about 12 pose a severe threat to people. However, even if the bite isn’t necessarily dangerous, their presence in your home could become an issue –especially if there is an undetected infestation.

Here in Arizona, the Black Widow is one that poses the greatest danger from a bite. They are black with a red hourglass shape under its belly, though it can also be white, yellow, or orange. They are more likely to live in the Western and Southern parts of the U.S. and Arizona is home to two kinds of widows – the Brown and Western Black. They prefer the dark, hiding out in places like the garage, woodpiles, shoes, boxes, stumps, and even your closets and pantries. They are not typically aggressive, and most bites occur when they are inadvertently threatened.

The reaction to bites from a Black Widow can be severe, though typically not life-threatening. You may experience intense muscle pain, increase in blood pressure, and flu-like symptoms. An antivenom is available for those who have a more severe reaction.
