Ants

Ants have been around on earth for much longer than we have. Numerous fossils date back to the Cretaceous period. They exist everywhere around the world, except Antarctica, and there are over 10,000 species. Most species are not a major health threat, but they are often an annoyance when they invade your home or property.

Common Species In Arizona

Some of the species frequently found in Arizona are Argentine, Crazy, Odorous House, Fire, and Carpenter. Argentines are dark brown and native to South America, mainly northern Argentina. Today they are found in many places around the world. They are attracted to mulch, decay, and waste. While they are not a threat to humans, they rapidly breed because they have multiple queens in one nest.

Because they take comfort in waste, they are likely to spread the disease on the surfaces they touch.

Crazy Ants can be black or reddish-brown and can reside in either dry or moist areas. They are territorial and will drive out other ants and quickly breed and take over your yard. They can sting, but their sting is not as painful as the Fire, but like Fire Ants, they can destroy electrical equipment in the household. Fire Ants tend to nest near the foundations of homes or other properties. They will sting people, and an unfortunate step into the nest will launch a swarming attack. People that are allergic to the sting can have a severe reaction and may need medical attention.

Odorous Ants are generally brown or black and tend to nest in wall or floor cracks within a home or business. They give off a smell similar to a rotten coconut whenever they are crushed, thus the reason for the name “odorous.” This is one species that is most commonly found in homes. Once they enter, they go straight to areas where sweets and meats are stored.

Carpenter Ants are problematic because they can cause structural damage to the home or office. They don’t eat the wood as termites do. Instead, they chew tunnels to lay their eggs. They also chew through insulation, drywall, and electrical wiring, causing a fire hazard.

What Lures Them Indoors

Ants tend to keep their activities outdoors, but there are times that they find their way into the home. Usually, it starts with a “scout” ant that travels alone seeking food and water opportunities. When this scout finds its bounty, it releases a pheromone, and then the hordes come out. They are usually attracted to sugary items and high moisture areas. It is usually best to seal off food sources, keep dishes clean, and try to dry out commonly moist areas of the home.
